The story of the region that is now the UAE is the story of a remarkable transformation in recent history. The area was home to nomadic tribes who subsisted on camel herding, fishing and pearl diving. The people were extremely poor and it is said that at times they were reduced to eating locusts. There was also some trade with neighbouring countries. With the discovery of and then export of first oil in 1962, all this began to change.
Nevertheless, what followed has been an amazing achievement. Many countries have had oil discovered on their territories, not all have used it wisely. And none to the extent that the UAE has.
In a short period of time the country through visionary leadership has gone from this:
To this:
Abu Dhabi
Capital; Pop: 3.25 million
Dubai
Pop: 3.38 million
Sharjah
Pop: 1.51 million
Ajman
Pop: 0.54 million
Ras Al Khaimah
Pop: 0.40 million
Fujairah
Pop: 0.25 million
Umm Al Quwain
Pop: 0.08 million
Al Ain
City in Abu Dhabi; Pop: 0.8 million
And this appears to be just the beginning. This is a young country of just over a million citizens but packed with ideas and boundless energy.
It has an enlightened leadership which has, above all, invested in the human capital of its million strong citizenship. It has recognised the need to leapfrog into the 21st century with emphasis on the technologies of tomorrow - space, artificial intelligence, etc. The Mars mission is a case in point. It was albeit launched on a foreign carrier rocket, but Rome wasn't built in a day. The country and its leadership has great ambitions and it will not be a surprise if this is rectified in the future.
The country has a very promising future and its real estate market is certainly one to keep tabs on:
